Food & Beverage Combined Mark Handcrafted 2024 9 days

Artisan Coffee Co.

A specialty coffee roaster wanted a mark that honored traditional craft while appealing to contemporary coffee culture. The hand-drawn bean illustration celebrates the artisanal process.

The Brief

Understanding the challenge

Artisan Coffee Co. is a specialty roaster operating from a small facility in Portland. Founder Miguel sources single-origin beans directly from farmers in Colombia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala, then roasts in small batches. His coffee was exceptional—winning regional competitions—but his brand wasn't. A rushed DIY logo didn't communicate the care and expertise behind every bag. He was losing shelf presence to competitors with slicker packaging.

The Approach

Our creative thinking

Miguel's coffee is handcrafted, so the brand should feel handcrafted too. We created an illustrated coffee bean mark with subtle hand-drawn qualities—imperfect in a way that feels intentional and human, not sloppy. The warm brown palette connects to the roasting process and the earth where beans are grown, while cream accents suggest the perfect pour. Typography is friendly but refined, approachable but expert. The result feels like it could be stamped on a burlap sack or printed on premium retail packaging.

The Outcome

The results that matter

Artisan Coffee's retail sales increased 60% in the first quarter after launching the new packaging. Miguel has since expanded into two new grocery chains and launched a successful subscription service with 500+ subscribers. Customers frequently keep the bags as kitchen decoration, extending the brand's reach.
